Standard Highlands Registration Rules

The Academy recognises both standard-bred and miniature highlands in its herdbook and applies international miniature breed standards to the miniature category. The herd book is divided into three categories:

  1. Standard-bred
  2. Hummel (polled)
  3. Miniature (under 42")

Grades

The Academy recognizes the following grades of Highland:
  • Fullblood (F): Animals whose parentage (Dam & Sire), are by registered fullbloods, in a herd book recognized by the Academy, at its discretion.
  • Purebred (P1, P2, P3, P4, FP): Animals one of whose Dam and Sire are registered as an A grade or Purebred (P1, P2, P3, P4, FP), the other being registered with an equal or higher grade, in a herd book recognized by the Academy, at its discretion. Purebred grades are calculated using the following table:

    Parent 1 Parent 2 Progeny

  • B Grade (B): Animals whose Dam is registered as a C grade, and whose Sire is registered P1 or higher, in a herd book recognized by the Academy, at its discretion.
  • C Grade (C): Animals whose Sire is registered P1 or higher, in a herd book recognized by the Academy, at its discretion.

Grade Assessment

Where a breeder or current owner is unable to produce satisfactory documentation of an animal's grade, they may apply to the Academy to have the animal assessed. An assessor appointed by the Academy will review any documentation that is available, as well as the animal itself and will make an assesment of the candidate animal's grade, which will be one of:
  • Assessed PureBred 1 (AP): The animal is (in the opinion of the assessor) a Pure-Bred (P1) animal under the rules of the Academy herdbook.
  • Assessed A-Grade (AA): The animal is (in the opinion of the assessor) an A-Grade animal under the rules of the Academy herdbook.
  • Assessed B-Grade (AB): The animal is (in the opinion of the assessor) a B-Grade animal under the rules of the Academy herdbook.
  • Assessed C-Grade (AC): The animal is (in the opinion of the assessor) a C-Grade animal under the rules of the Academy herdbook.

When (in the opinion of the assessor) the candidate animal does not meet the standard to be registered as any of the assessed grades, the Academy will not register the candidate animal.

Academy documents referring to the animal whose grade has been assessed will show that assessed status as one of:

  • PureBred 1 (a)
  • A-Grade (a)
  • B-Grade (a)
  • C-Grade (a)

  • Where the animal whose grade has been assessed appears in the genealogy of another animal, the relevant assessed grades will be shown as AP, AA, AB or AC.
